  1. I’M PLANNING A TRIP TO ARIZONA THIS FALL TO EXPLORE OLD STAGECOACH STATIONS. CAN YOU HELP ME LOCATE ONE IN PARTICULAR KNOWN AS “PINE SPRING STATION” ? I’M CONFUSED BECAUSE ONE DESCRIPTION PUTS IT BETWEEN BEAVERHEAD STATION, ARIZONA AND BRIGHAM CITY WHILE ANOTHER PLACES IT SOMEWHERE NEAR HAPPY JACK BETWEEN FLAGSTAFF AND CLINTS WELL, ARIZONA.

ALSO CAN YOU NAME SOME GOOD RESEARCH BOOKS AND OTHER LITERATURE, MAPS ETC. FOR OLD STAGECOACH ROUTES IN ARIZONA?

ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    THANKS,

    RJ GILHOOLEY

  2. Good books include Encyclopedia of Stagecoach Robbery in Arizona….Rock Springs Arizona History (Volume 1)….Grand Canyon-Flagstaff Stage Coach Line : A History & Exploration Guide (Arizona and the Southwest)

  3. While surfing for anything on the steamer Yosemite I ran across your posting of January 25, 2013, titled Sacramento History/The Steamboat.
I found one problem with the article on the Yosemite. You have it that it exploded at Rio Visa. Not correct. The name is Rio Vista. It was just pulling away from the Bruning Wharf. Rio Vista Landing is fine. I have done extensive research on the Yosemite, as my stepfather’s great uncle was killed in the explosion.
I have come up with 54 whites killed and 36 Chinese. The number of whites could be higher. 54 can be proven but there could be more that weren’t found. See the following:

“It is thought by some that the number of dead and wounded on the wreck and on shore, and the uninjured, did not equal the aggregate number of souls on board by twenty-five or thirty”.
Sacramento Daily Union October 16, 1865 City Intelligence

The statement below was taken from the inquest held at Rio Vista, on the afternoon of the 13th of October by A. F. KNORP, Coroner Solano County. This should be considered the official record of those on the boat.

James S, Johnston sworn— I am the First Clerk on the Yosemite; was on board the boat at the time of the explosion, and in my office; there were a little over (150) one hundred and fifty passengers on board, and about (60) sixty men comprising officers and crew (total 210+); I know nothing as to immediate cause of explosion; do not recognize any of the bodies before me; keep no correct list of passengers excepting of those to whom we sell staterooms, but I had a very correct idea of the number of passengers yesterday; had collected the tickets and balanced my cash account previous to our coming to Rio Vista; there were (85)eighty-five cabin passengers, besides (21) twenty-one of Maguire theatrical troupe, also cabin passengers+?— (1)one boy in the cabin, paying half price and (44) forty-four steerage passengers, thirty-five of which were Chinese, and (1)one Chinese belonging to the boat, who travels up and down on the river as a sort of a mail agent for his countrymen; in addition to the above, there was (1)one cabin passenger for Rio Vista and (1)one for Benicia; the boat has on her pay-roll (65)sixty-five officers and men as her usual crew; think there are three Chinese missing— three went to Sacramento last night and thirty were found on the boat this morning, dead do not know how many cabin passengers are missing. Note: This section adds up to 219+ according to the Clerk this time. Would it be fair to say that this First Clerk is at the least vague?

  4. Is it possible to e-mail some other photos of the Gallows frame telephone . I like to see side views and top views . I am making a replica and I like to be accurate. This gallows you have is one of only two and the true gallows which Alexander Graham Bell had made. If you type in Gallows frame telephone you will get the cleaned up version. Thank you for your time mike.

  5. I’m probably pissin in the wind on this one but what the heck…..here goes. lol

I’m looking for someone who could give my father a ride in a C-47 (DC-3). He is a Korean War Veteran, who is very active in the Korean War Veteran’s Associtation. He has won many medals in the Conflict (including the Air Medal). He is currently 84, and in very good shape for his age, and he used to be a radio/communications airman in the C-47.

I would sincerely appreciate some or any information on individuals who might own a C-47 and let me give my father a suprise gift ride as a suprise for this comming years Father’s Day (2015). He lives and breaths his C-47 years and constantly stays informed with any articles, airshows, etc. regarding it. We live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Please …….anyone……let me know of any ideas.

    Sincerely,

    Eric Wittig

  6. You might want to update your Billy-the-Kid-in-the-Santa-Fe jail entry. It’s been pretty well established that the jail’s SF street location had been moved to a Water St. location before BtK’s arrival. See: “Billy the Kid’s Jail,” by Lynn Michelsohn.
